TITLE:
Report on the contents of a bottle of water from Col<o>n, Panam<a>
ABSTRACT:
When received from our colleague Dr. Str<o>mfelt, of the Popay<a>n Museum in Le<o>n, the water (H{-2}O) of a bottle retrieved at sea gave out an excessively disagreeable odor of putrefying organic matter, and ammonia (NH{-3}) was given off in considerable quantities, as was shown by holding a rod moistened with hydrochloric acid (HCl) over the mouth of the bottle. Inside was discovered a greenish-colored, slimy deposit, microscopic examination of which revealed a large quantity of eggs of some animal, and the decomposed remains of a fish. Evidence will be presented to show that the main content of the slimy mass originated from eggs deposited by a frog, most probably {iAtelopus varius}, and that the fish, a poeciliid of the genus {iPriapichthys} Regan, died while attempting to eat the fetid remains.
