ASIH 1997 Joint Meetings

    Museum Collections

  • The UW Fish Collection , located in the Fisheries Teaching and Research building on the southwest part of campus (see map), will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the meetings (weekend included). People interested in touring the facilities are welcome to visit, without appointment, during those hours.

Lab bench space and microscopes will be available, by appointment only, for people interested in examining specimens. Please contact Collections Manager Brian Urbain at (206) 543-3816, or urbain@fish.washington.edu, well in advance, to schedule an appointment or to make arrangements for a loan. A searchable database for all holdings (larvae as well as juveniles and adults), as well as a wide array of other information about the collection, is available on the internet: http://artedi.fish.washington.edu.

  • The Burke Memorial Washington State Museum will, unfortunately, be closed to the public during the summer of 1997 for installation of new permanent exhibits. Nevertheless, the herpetological collection will be available to those wishing to examine specimens. If you are interested, contact Jim Kenagy at (206) 543-7389, kenagy@u.washington.edu.

  • The herpetological collection of the Slater Museum of Natural History at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma is available for study by interested researchers. The collection of 8,500 specimens is primarily of historical interest, most of the specimens from the mid or early part of this century. The majority are from the Pacific Northwest, but there are specimens from many areas, including many from the Dominican Republic. The collection is computerized, making it easy to respond to queries about species or geographic areas. Contact Dennis Paulson for information and access.
