We propose to organize a symposium concerning the use of chemical stimuli in the context of predation. Research in this area has shown tremendous growth in past decades, and we feel that it is an appropriate time for a symposium that highlights recent data, synthesizes current knowledge in this area, and suggests directions for future research. Because we feel that ichthyologists and herpetologists have contributed disproportionately to recent advances in the study of chemical ecology in predation, we feel that the ASIH meeting is a particularly appropriate venue for this symposium.

Possible topics to be addressed include chemical alarm signals and responses by both conspecifics and heterospecifics, chemical defenses, and recognition of predators and prey via chemical cues. We envision a symposium that would consist of three sessions, one for each taxonomic group, with each session including four to six speakers.

For a list of the speakers, and the titles of their talks, see Session 71 and Session 81.
